Our large newly acquired BMA lease allows us to offer firearm and archery hunts for black bears in some of the best black bear territory in North America.
Located in one of the most remote areas of Northwest Ontario, hunters can use rifles, shotguns, muzzleloaders or archery equipment to enjoy a great black bear hunting experience.
Because The Bears Den is owned and operated by a full-time bear outfitter and hunter, the knowledge, experience and ethics keeps us on common ground.
Every night of the hunt, we provide one-on-one coaching and assistance on any issue or concern you may have.
In more than 25 years, our camps have accounted for many Pope & Young and Boone & Crockett black bears. This is truly untouched wilderness.
The Bears Den provides 2 hunt options at Camp #2:
Plan #1: Hunters provide and prepare their own meals in their cabins.
Plan #2: The Bears Den provides 3 hearty meals each day.
At Camp #2 meals are served, and hunters gather are at the main lodge.
For both plan options, The Bears Den will provide the following services during your hunt:
Lodging: We have heat, indoor plumbing, plenty of hot and cold running water and constant electricity.
Cooking Facilities: There are kitchen facilities in cabins for those wanting to prepare their own meals.
Refrigeration and Freezing Facilities: We have freezers to store food as well as the meat and the hide from your bear.
Other Recreation: The 30 lakes and rivers within 30 miles of the camp provide fishing opportunities for walleye, pike, perch, lake trout, and brook trout. At Camp #2, boats and motors can be rented and used at a great fishing lake less than 1/2 mile away.
Active Baits: Bait sites are baited every other day for at least one month before hunting season opens. Records are kept for each bait site, and only the most active sites are hunted. No bait is ever hunted for more than 1 week.
All Bait: We provide all the bait for your hunt. Bait consists of fresh meat and molasses.
Blinds: All bait sites have blinds with shots ranging from 25 to 80 yards for firearms and 15 to 20 yards for bowhunters. Hunters will have to supply their own treestand if they want to hunt from a treestand. Treestands are recommended for bowhunters.
Tracking and Retrieval: Our professionally trained guides and tracking dogs will help track and retrieve your bear.
Skinning and Butchering: Our guides will assist you in skinning and quartering your bear in our indoor skinning room.
Hunters must provide the following equipment:
Firearms and Archery Gear: Firearms should be of a caliber capable of harvesting a bear and must be registered upon entry into Canada. The following CANNOT be used for hunting black bear: rimfire rifles, a shotgun smalller than 20 gauge, and any shotgun loadded with shot smaller than #1 buck shot. Bows must have a minimum weight of 49 lbs and 24" draw length. We prefer 55+ lbs and multiple blade broadheads. Mechanical broadheads are not preferred. All broadheads MUST be sharp!
Hunting Skills: This is truly a hunter's hunting camp. Shooting skills should be honed before the hunt begins. Practice shooting while wearing full hunting clothing to insure that everything is preared for the shot. Hunters are most successful when they can be motionless for long periods of time and are constantly using all their senses.
Camouflage and Clothing: Most bait sites are located in areas with pine trees and the foliage during bear hunts is generally green. Most commercial camo patterns will suffice, but green patterns may be an advantage. Temperatures may be from 30 to 70 degrees fahrenheit and rain is a possibility. Comfortable waterproof boots are a must. A clean set of clothes will make the trip home more pleasant. A Hunter Orange vest and hat are required when traveling to and from your stand for all hunters.
Food and Drinks: If hunters are supplying their own meals, bring all of your favorite food and drinks from home. Hillsport does not have a broad selection of these items, and costs will likely be cheaper from home. Canadian customs limits the amount of alcohol and tobacco that can be brought across the border.
Transportation: Hunters must provide transportation to and from The Bears Den, and transportation to and from the bait sites. Two and four wheel drive trucks are recommended.
Hunting License: At Camp #2 we are a hunting license reseller. You must bring a previous hunting license or a hunter safety card from your home state or province in order to obtain an Ontario hunting license. You can choose to purchase a license before you arrive.
Other Recreation Equipment: Hunters may bring boats, motors and fishing equipment for the local lakes and rivers. ATVs are popoular for fun and transportation (check Ontario regulations). Cards and board games are common indoor activities.
Miscellaneous: Passport, drivers license, or proof of citizenship (check U.S. and Canadian regulations) are required to travel in Ontario. Large plastic food bags (not garbage bags), coolers, burlap (for hides), and salt are useful for transporting your bear home. Cash in Canadian funds, GOOD flashlights, knives, a first aid kit, toiletries, a camera, and a compass or GPS are recommended.
Optional Equipment: Hunters may bring their own treestands if they are more comfortable. Bugs can be a problem. Headnets and repellent with DEET is recommended.
